2006 April First Sugihara Cup
The Sugihara cup started with the idea of helping NZ competitors get international experience without having to leave NZ. Having only returned to teaching in NZ in 1998 and getting involved in NZ competition from 2004, sensei Duane thought that the cost of competing overseas and what he thought was an apprehension from a lot of NZ competitors when facing internationals' was holding them back. The Sugihara Cup was his answer to help.
The tournament was named after the Fushin Ryu Founder, Kenpu Sugihara. The tournament was opened by his grandson, Kenji Sugihara Sensei.
