1996 Maezawa Full Contact tournament - Tokyo
With the USS Independence aircraft carrier on deployment in the Gulf the Fushin Ryu Students entered in the Maezawa Full Contact Karate Championships were unable to attend. Student Vince fields, a Marine on the Yokosuka navel base, would only go if he had company. Sensei Duane on one weeks training gave it a go! Vince did outstanding, standing 6ft 6 tall and tough as nails fought well, although he did cop a few warnings for head contact (not on purpose). This is understandable, due to different rules in full contact bouts. It was hard to change trained habits. Sensei Duane's bout was a draw so went to overtime. Unfortunately teaching fitness is different to fighting fitness and it didn't end well. Again warnings for head contact and no points for takedowns proved to be great lessons :-) Vince has gone on to be an Author on his return to the states after life in the military.
