8th Commonwealth Karate Championships held in New Delhi, India
A New Zealand Team of 32 Competitors attending including 5 from FRK
Brendon Running won the under 75kg Male kumite making it 3 Commonwealth kumite titles and anchored the NZ team to a victory for Bronze in Team Kumite.
Marina Monk won the Senior Female Kata.
Mark Chester didn't have the best tournament lead up with being sick before heading out to India and an allergic reaction to the Malaria pill but I am sure it will prove to be a great learning experience.
Charlotte Munro was looking promising in Kumite, leading 2-0 with 1 minute to go. Unfortunately she was unable to hold the lead and went down 3-2
Our newest member joining us from Shukokai in the South Island last month Jodie Batt unfortunately didn't get the result we had had hoped for but this valuable experience will serve her well in the future.
NZ was 4th on the medals table with some great performances from the NZ team Captains Brendon and Sophie Savill from Goju Kai in Christchurch. Dominating their divisions to take gold. MVP for the tournament were Alice Sparks who won her kumite division, bronze in the 16/17 kata and silver in the senior womens Kata and Antonino with a bronze in the under 21 Kumite, silver in under 75kg senior mens and bronze in the team kumite.
